Dr. Matthew Thompson

Dr. Thompson was born in Durango, Colorado, and raised in a small town in New Mexico, where he spent his early years helping on his family farm. His first passion, baseball, took him across the country and ultimately led to an offer from the Milwaukee Brewers. However, valuing education, he turned down the opportunity to play professionally and followed his twin brother to college, where he completed his baseball career as a third baseman for the University of New Mexico Lobos.

Driven by a passion for dentistry, Dr. Thompson earned his degree from the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine, graduating with honors. He then pursued advanced training at the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver, where he excelled in prosthodontics, IV sedation, oral surgery—including dental implants and wisdom teeth removal—and endodontics. His outstanding performance earned him an invitation to return as chief resident and later as resident faculty. However, the call of New Mexico and its signature green chili brought him home, where he joined Summit Family Dental.

Dr. Thompson is an active member of several esteemed professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, New Mexico Dental Association, Colorado Prosthodontic Society, American Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Additionally, he is trained and certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), ensuring the highest level of safety and care for his patients.

With extensive experience in both clinical and academic dentistry, Dr. Thompson remains committed to lifelong learning. He is an active member of the prestigious Spear Education group in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he trains alongside some of the nation’s top clinicians—far exceeding New Mexico’s licensure requirements.

Outside the office, Dr. Thompson cherishes time with his family, enjoys mountain biking, reading and exploring New Mexico’s vibrant cuisine. He is proud to serve his community, bringing high-quality dental care to the place he calls home.
